A fine eye for colour, composition and a massive love for plants and flowers she has; Ruby Barber. The talented florist from Berlin was recently asked to work on a campaign for Gucci Bloom. Ruby sees flowers as her way to send positive messages to the world. She’s living her dream to use flowers as media every single day_______.

What’s your earliest memory of flowers?

“It’s not my earliest memory but I will never forget experiencing the flower market in Sydney for the first time. I had never seen such an abundance of flowers. After working with flowers for so many years I’ve become quite picky and my idea of what’s beautiful has become more refined but back then every flower was as beautiful as the next.”

Which flower reminds you of your mother?

“Gardenia reminds me of my mum. She often had gardenia bunches around the house and she also always wears gardenia scented perfume. The scent alone is enough to remind me of her.”

When did you last buy someone flowers?

“Gifting flowers is second nature to me. I buy people flowers every day!”

What’s your favourite flower store (and why)?

“I love Azuma Makoto’s Studio in Japan. It’s more like a flower laboratory! I am drawn to environments that aren’t too romantic.”

Most stunning memory on roses?

“I find roses most romantic growing wild. Overblown with imperfect petals. I think the most best moments I’ve had with roses have been in private greenhouses or on the side of the road.”

What’s an unexpected but great place in a home to put flowers?

“I have a canopy of flowers drying in my bedroom. I hang any leftover stems there and these days I have almost a full ceiling of flowers.”

The smell of fresh flowers makes me feel...

“...Motivated.”

Which IG’ers inspire you in a flowery way?

“At this moment: Nick knights roses @nick_knight and Paintings Daily @paintings.daily.”

Without flowers my home feels...

“I actually never have flowers in my home! It’s what separates my flower studio with my house. Flowers captivate so much of my attention every day so I also like to have time apart from them.”

Most stunning thing you’ve seen with withered flowers?

“I love the Simone Rocha installation ‘flowers in cars’. Old Saabs and Volvo’s bursting with dried flowers displayed in her flagship store accompanied by a very beautiful and nostalgic photos series by Jacob Lillis.”

Which flowers were or will be in your wedding bouquet?

“I’m not married but if I ever do have a wedding bouquet I would like it to be designed for me without too much personal input. I would choose a florist who has a good eye for special flowers and leave it to them.”

When you think of a field of flowers, what flowers do you imagine?

“I’ve been fortunate enough to see fields of flowers all over Europe. I imagine driving on a country road and spotting a splash of colour in the landscape. Usually they are fields of something quite generic but en masse these common flowers become quite poetic.”
